Arthur Golden is an American author best known for his internationally acclaimed novel Memoirs of a Geisha. Born in 1956 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Golden was raised in a family with strong literary and cultural roots—his grandfather was the co-founder of Time magazine. Golden studied Japanese art and history at Harvard University and later earned a Master’s degree in Japanese history from Columbia University. His deep academic background, including time spent living in Tokyo, profoundly influenced his literary voice and thematic choices.
Golden’s breakthrough came with the publication of Memoirs of a Geisha in 1997. The novel, narrated in the first person, follows the life of a fictional geisha named Sayuri from her childhood in a poor fishing village to her rise as one of Kyoto’s most celebrated geisha before and after World War II.
