Robert E. Howard

Robert E. Howard

Robert Ervin Howard (1906–1936) was an American author who is universally credited as the creator of the Sword and Sorcery genre. A prolific writer, Howard was a cornerstone figure in the pulp magazine era of the 1920s and 1930s.

While Howard’s life was tragically short, his creative output was immense. He created several other enduring characters, including Kull of Atlantis and the Puritan adventurer Solomon Kane. His work is distinguished by its kinetic action, primal energy, and often-dark atmosphere. Although sometimes criticized for its rough prose and simple plotting, Howard’s genuine sense of adventure, his powerful world-building (especially the Hyborian Age), and his creation of the iconic Conan ensure his status as one of the most important and influential authors in the history of fantasy and horror literature.
