Wilkie Collins

William Wilkie Collins (1824-1889) was an English novelist and playwright. A close friend and collaborator of Charles Dickens, Collins was a pioneer in developing the suspense and mystery genres. His novels are known for their intricate plotting, dramatic suspense, and social commentary. His works often challenged Victorian social norms, particularly those concerning women and marriage.

Collins was a master of the "sensation novel," a popular genre of the time that combined mystery, crime, and melodrama. His most famous works, The Woman in White and The Moonstone, are considered the finest examples of the genre and have had a lasting influence on subsequent mystery writers. He is remembered as a master storyteller who elevated the mystery novel from mere entertainment to a serious art form.
